Acrylic Paints

What are acrylic paints?

In acrylic paints, the binding agent for pigments is a synthetic acrylic polymer emulsion (made from acrylic resin). Plasticizers and other ingredients are added. Acrylic paints are water-soluble and quick-drying, and when they dry, they become waterproof. The required density is achieved by adding water as a solvent or acrylic gels.

With technological advancements, products that do not dry too quickly and can be reactivated after drying are now available. Usually, work is done on a primed surface, but it is possible to apply them directly. They form glossy or matte coatings.

They have vibrant colors, high durability, and are offered in tubes, jars, as well as sprays and markers.

History of acrylic paints in painting

They appeared on the market around the mid-20th century, and artists immediately began experimenting with them. One of the most famous artists who used them is the pop art artist Andy Warhol.

Today, they are widely distributed and compete for the attention of creators and the public with oil paints, which have a long history.

Main characteristics of acrylic paints

Easy application: They are easy to apply while having a dense texture. They dry very quickly, and the color darkens after drying. They combine the best qualities of oil paints - creamy texture, opacity, smooth blending, and vivid colors - with those of watercolor paints - fast drying, water solubility, easy cleaning, etc.
Versatility: They are extremely versatile, with a wide range of applications and can be used in various styles and techniques. They successfully mimic transparent watercolor when diluted; oil paint when applied in thick layers and built up for achieving realistic three-dimensionality, even gouache. With them, unique works are created, unattainable with other techniques.
Richness of colors: They offer a significant variety of colors and shades with high pigment quality.
Durability: They do not crack like oil paints and do not fade like watercolors.
Adhesion: They adhere well to almost any non-greasy surface and can therefore be successfully applied to various bases - wood and wooden panels, stone, glass, textiles, plastics, etc.
